En 2008 construímos —según propio diseño— un rancho de madera, tierras y paja en la costa de Rocha, Uruguay. Como familia vivimos allí durante 8 años en un intento de autosustento permacultural, buscando una reconexión con la supervivencia física en la naturaleza.

In 2008 we built —according to our own design— a ranch made of wood, earth and straw on the coast of Rocha, Uruguay. As a family we lived there for 8 years in an attempt at permacultural self-sustenance, seeking a reconnection with physical survival in nature.

Toda la basura se reutiliza o guarda para ser utilizada. El corazón del gran rancho es un horno de ladrillo y barro, dotado de caños metálicos que calientan agua para consumo en baño y cocina todo el año, y calefacción por losa radiante en invierno. La energía de la leña de acacia, cortada por nosotros en el lugar, se aprovecha para este calentamiento de agua y para cocinar en el mismo horno. También logramos un sistema de procesamiento de aguas grises y negras mediante un humedal, en el que tarrinas de decantación y plantas acuáticas limpian las aguas sucias antes de devolverlas  al medio. También logramos realizar un techo verde muy eficaz, reutilizando cubiertas de moto y envases industriales vacíos como colchón de aire. Produjimos una buena cantidad de alimentos para nuestro consumo y consumimos local en lo posible.

All garbage is repurposed or kept for future use. The heart of the large ranch is a brick and clay oven, equipped with metal pipes that heat water for consumption in the bathroom and kitchen all year round, and underfloor heating in winter. The energy of the acacia wood, cut by us on site, is used for this water heating and for cooking in the same oven. We also achieved a gray and black water processing system through a wetland, in which settling tanks and aquatic plants clean dirty water before returning it to the environment. We also managed to create a very effective green roof, reusing motorcycle tires and empty industrial containers as an air cushion. We produced a good amount of food for our consumption and consumed local when possible.

Ahora continúo trabajando para la evolución del lugar en un crecimiento sustentable. Recibimos voluntarios de varias partes del mundo que vinieron a ayudarnos y aprender, y a quienes cobijamos con techo, comida y hospitalidad, creándose un fructífero ámbito de intercambio cultural.

I continue working for the evolution of the place into sustainable growth. We received volunteers from various parts of the world who came to help us and learn, and whom we sheltered with roof, food and hospitality, creating a fruitful realm of ​​cultural exchange.

Al momento, luego de haber experimentado durante años el primer rancho, se está construyendo un prototipo de Casa Loma, con madera y arcilla del lugar, priorizando el protagonismo del Techo Vivo Verde, de mínimas irrupción visual en el paisaje y manutención, con aerodinamia apta sudestada y fuegos. Luego del prototipo finalizado, la idea es replicarlo de manera fácil y en serie. Mediante sistema modular, el prototipo se adaptaría tanto a viviendas sociales como a casas de lujo. Principalmente pensando en la aún importante oportunidad del departamento de Rocha para desarrollar su costa e interior, de forma sustentable, naturalmente estética y creadora de trabajo local.

At the moment, after having experienced the first ranch for years, a prototype of Casa Loma is being built, with wood and clay from the place, prioritizing the prominence of the Living Green Roof, with minimal visual disruption in the landscape and maintenance, with aerodynamics apt for the Sudestada winds and fires. After the finished prototype, the idea is to easily replicate in series. Through a modular system, the prototype would adapt to both social housing and luxury homes. Mainly thinking about the still-important opportunity for the department of Rocha to develop its coast and interior, in a sustainable, naturally aesthetic manner, generating local work.
